McLaren History & Models

McLaren was founded in 1963 by New Zealand racing driver Bruce McLaren. Initially established as a racing team, it has grown into a significant player in both Formula One and luxury sports car manufacturing.


Key Milestones


Founding and Early Years (1963-1970)

  • 1963: Bruce McLaren Motor Racing was established.
  • 1966: The team made its Formula One debut at the Monaco Grand Prix.
  • 1968: McLaren won its first Grand Prix at the Belgian Grand Prix.
  • 1970: Bruce McLaren tragically died in a testing accident, but his legacy continued.

Rise to Prominence (1970s-1990s)

  • 1974: McLaren won its first Drivers' Championship with Emerson Fittipaldi.
  • 1981: Introduction of the MP4/1, the first car to use a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, revolutionizing race car design.
  • 1992: Launch of the McLaren F1 road car, which became the fastest production car in the world.

Recent Developments (2000s-Present)

  • 2008: Lewis Hamilton won the Drivers' Championship, marking a significant achievement for the team.
  • 2010: McLaren Automotive was re-launched, separating from the racing team to focus on luxury sports cars.
  • 2026: McLaren is set to defend its World Championship title, continuing its legacy in Formula One.
